The magnitude assigned to a particular position in a numeral, such as units, tens, hundreds, etc. in the decimal system.

For example, in the decimal system, the place value for 2 in 234.5 is 100; the place value for 3 in 234.5 is 10; the place value for 4 in 234.5 is 1; the place value for 5 in 234.5 is 0.1. Therefore,

234.5 = 2×100 + 3×10 + 4×1 + 5×0.1
