index (plural indices)
A number used to point out a specific characteristic or operation (e.g., an integer placed above and to the left of a radical sign to indicate what root is sought: symbol radical expression = 4; the index is omitted when the radical represents a square root: symbol radical expression = 8; root indices may be written as fractional exponents: symbol radical expression = 641/2).
