The principle that states all possible outcomes in a given situation can be found by multiplying the number of ways each event can happen.

For example, if we can travel from San Francisco to Chicago in 3 ways and then from Chicago to New York in 2 ways, then we can go from San Francisco to New York in 3×2, or 6, ways.
