fraction
A number that represents one or more equal parts of a whole, written as a quotient such as m/n (one number m divided by another number n). The top of the fraction (m) is called the numerator, and the bottom number (n) is called the denominator.

If we cut a pie into n equal slices and give a person m slices, we may say that particular person obtains m/n of the pie, in which the denominator n represents the total number of slices the pie has been divided into and the numerator m tells the number of slices that particular person gets.
