The expression (b2 - 4ac) in a quadratic equation ax2 + bx + c = 0. It can be used to determine the characteristics of the solution.

The quadratic equation has two unique real roots if the discriminant is positive; two identical roots if the discriminant is zero; and two unique complex numbers as roots if the discriminant is negative.
