common denominator
A whole number that is a common multiple of all the denominators of a set of fractions.

According to the definition, both 6 and 12 are common denominators of 1/2 and 1/3. In this case, the number 6 is also called the lowest common denominator (LCD) because it is the smallest number that is a common multiple of all the denominators.
