closed (under an operation)
Describing a set for which a given operation (such as addition and multiplication) gives a result that is also a member of the same set.

For example, the set of even numbers is closed with respect to addition because the sum of two even numbers is always an even number. However, the set of odd numbers is not closed with respect to addition because the sum of two odd numbers is not an odd number.

Related Terms: even number, odd number
