The action of simplifying a fraction or ratio by dividing both the numerator and the denominator by a common factor.

For example, 6/8 cancels to 3/4 when dividing both the numerator and the denominator by 2. Similarly, the algebraic expression 4xy/2yz cancels to 2x/z when both the top and bottom are divided by 2y.
