base (in a number system)
The number of different symbols used in a particular number system.

For example, in the decimal number system (the usual counting system of numbers), the base is 10 because there are a total of 10 symbols being used (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9). Since the binary number system uses only two symbols, 0 and 1, its base is 2.
