amplitude
The maximum distance or value of a varying quantity from its mean or base value, or half the maximum peak-to-peak value of a periodic function such as a simple harmonic motion.

In case of y = sinx, the maximum possible value is 1 and the minimum possible value is -1. Hence, the amplitude is (1-(-1))/2 = 1.
